In order for a drug defendant to successfully break free from the grips of addiction, they must be given the opportunity and tools to achieve sobriety and maintain it. For many, a major hurdle in conquering addiction is not having a safe place to pursue drug recovery without being exposed to the temptations, trauma, or harmful relationships that led them to drugs in the first place.

Thankfully, drug defendants looking to achieve lasting sobriety can find it with the help of the S.T.A.R. program through the Harris County Drug Court. The S.T.A.R. program stands for Success Through Addiction Recovery, and a key component of their recovery process is offering transitional housing to participants.

A significant number of defendants entering the drug court are homeless, and most come from environments that do not support lasting recovery. The S.T.A.R. program provides transitional housing followed by sober living to allow drug court defendants to step down gradually from treatment to reenter the community, increasing their chance of long-term recovery success. Transitional housing allows addicts to focus solely on their recovery process while also providing an encouraging environment and support system.
